Warbirds To Fly Over Delaware For The Leukemia And Lymphoma Society – Volunteers Still Needed

Planning is in high gear for this year’s event, scheduled for July 10-13. Press releases have been sent to 39 print and broadcast media companies; invitations to pre-register have been sent to last year’s participants; the Young Marines and Scouts will once again participate; Phyllis Crain is hard at work making event badges for the pilots; SKS Video has called to say they will be filming the event again this year; and the contingent from Long Island has told us they will be back again in force.

Several new approaches will be tried for the first time this year. Advertising of the event to the general public mentions only Saturday as the date of the event; this may keep Friday and Sunday more focused on the enjoyment of the event by participating pilots. Saturday parking for spectators will be located at the entrance to the Lums Pond campground. The Club is contracting for two school busses, on staggered schedules, to shuttle spectators to and from the event area, with turn-arounds established for the busses at each location. Park rangers will be used for traffic control instead of police officers. John Kirchstein is heading up a Saturday night barbeque for pilots and volunteers. Pit passes (wristbands) will be free to all registered pilots, observers, and event volunteers; others will be charged $5 for pit access.

We are most happy to announce that Warbirds will be a fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The Society will set up an information booth in front of the pavilion and will also be the beneficiary of several activities during Warbirds.

To date, 44 pilots and 73 aircraft have pre-registered for the event – from as far away as North Carolina. Five vendors have already pre-registered, including two from Florida.

You can help CDs Dave and Pete Malchione maximize the fun and minimize the workload on those already committed to helping with the event by signing up to be a volunteer. Your support is really needed even if you can only help for a couple of hours, a half day, one day, or any mix of time. Please sign up by contacting Pete or Dave Malchione, John Kirchstein, or Carl Hauger. You can also sign up online by going to a special web page on the Club website: www.delawarerc.org/volunteerreg.htm
Thanks in advance for your support!

Fun Scale Contest Report

CD Tony Albence once again served up a fun day of scale R/C flying competition that was enjoyed by 17 pilots with 20 aircraft despite adverse weather forecasts. Two registrants from a New Jersey club were so impressed that they said they planned to try the same format at their site. Every participant, from pilots to judges, received a prize. The top scorer was David Malchione Jr.; followed by Ryan Jamison, Matt Chapman, Bob Mackey, Adam Lilley, Jim Schlapfer, Sam Halstrom, and Bob Karlsson. Jim Schlapfer entered four aircraft in the contest; he finished 6th, 9th, 11th, and 15th! Thanks to Tony, to Rick Scott for doing all the scoring, and to all the judges and participants.
