Delaware R/C hosted an AMA sanctioned 3-pylon Quickie 500 race on May 18th. The event turned out to be a turtled success, with the club raising more then $400 after all expenses were paid. Delaware R/C has gotten exceptional feedback from the pilots of the race, who drove from as far as New York to compete in the 424 Thunder Tiger and 428 Nelson class quickie races.
After a few rain delayed practices, we started the races which unfortunately required the full day to complete. The registration ended at 9AM, and the first round of the 424 class started at around 9:45AM. We had 20 pilots registered for the 424 and 13 pilots registered in the 428 Nelson class. All of the park's parking costs were taken care of with the registration fees.
There was a small shortage in course workers, but we managed to pull it off with 3 planes per heat. There really is no way to thank the workers enough for their hard work and sacrificed time. For those of you could not make it, we had the field set up primarily to meet AMA's "minimum" requirements for a sanctioned event. We'd like to thank Thomas Lahart for watching Pylon #2, Bill Bass for Watching pylon #3, Jim Schlapfer, Mike Hudak and his wife Dianne for handling the cut lights on Pylon #1, Bill Brenchly for help with cooking the hamburgers and hotdogs. We'd also like to thank all the people who worked at the lap counting tent-the wives of the pilots and course workers ran the race flawlessly with a great help from the Steves. We (the pilots and contest directors, Patrick Crain and Gene Bass) all would like to thank you again for pushing yourselves the whole day; we sincerely appreciated it.
Many Club members were on hand last year when Frank Noll, his son Jason, and highly regarded Carden builder Terry Boston spent a great Saturday at the Lums Pond Flying Field and entertained all of us with their precision flying the day before their appearance at the New Garden Air Show. We understand that Frank will again be in town this year for New Garden and will likely visit our field the day before (May 31st). Frank’s show this year, as seen at the Joe Nall, is a team event featuring precision formation flying. We haven’t heard if his partner will join him this weekend. In any event, Frank’s flying skills and his new covering design are well worth seeing.
Thanks are extended to member Carl Cantera for arranging to have our runways rolled; this task was accomplished on May 20th. Special thanks also go to Wayne Marston for all the support he has provided over the years. Other items are still in need of attention including new fence rails and refurbishment of the impound racks; please volunteer to help as the need arises.
At the Joe Nall event, held May 14-17, a number of items were raffled to support the Youth Masters. Many of these items were obtained through the hard work of Delaware R/C Club member Matt Chapman. Matt also performed precision full-scale aerobatics in his CAP 231EX. To honor Matt for his exemplary efforts to support the Youth Masters, the event organizers announced that the new name for the event would be the Matt Chapman Youth Masters. Congratulations, Matt! To date, two of our younger Club members – Davey Moyer and Ryan Jamison – have registered for this event, which will be held June 21 in Woodruff, South Carolina.
Check out the information about the New Garden Air Show on the poster below. The show benefits the non-profit museum on the field as well as promotes aviation to the local community. The fixed costs for the museum and airport, which include insurance, have gone up over 100%; the success of this air show and subsequent ones is important for the health of the field. Some of us first caught the R/C aviation bug through attendance at this show and checking out Joe Patterson’s display. And, you even get the chance to see Matt Chapman’s aerobatic show!
May 1 was the magic date! Make sure you have purchased and affixed an annual park sticker to your vehicle. If you have any questions about the park fee system, please contact the Lums Pond State Park office at 302-368-6989.
In order to keep all our members informed of all Club news, it is crucial that the Club remain informed of all changes to our members’ contact information. Please send all changes of address and phone number to our Treasurer, Dick Stewart (302-368-2911 or BALTICPLY@aol.com). E-mail address changes should be sent to John Kirchstein (jakirchstein@comcast.net) and Carl Hauger (cewhauger@yahoo.com).
