Fun Scale Contest Wrap-Up

After seemingly endless days of rain, the weather gods smiled on Lums Pond State Park this past Saturday, serving up a bright and sunny day tailor made for a fun scale contest. So eleven pilots entered thirteen aircraft in this long-running Delaware R/C Club event and more than fifty others turned out to help, look, and eat. Tony Albence once again served up a truly fun event with the expert record keeping of Rick Scott.

Following a demo of pattern flying by David Malchione each aircraft flew three rounds of pattern events comprised of four mandatory and five self-select maneuvers. Every aircraft – albeit some just barely – finished all three rounds. When all the flying was over, the order of finish (including aircraft and final score) was as follows:

1st – David Malchione (Cap 232, 97.75); 2nd (Dick Stewart (Ryan ST-M, 94.75); 3rd – Bob Karlsson (J3 Cub, 92.75); 4th – Jim Schlapfer (L-4, 88.25); 5th – Ryan Jamison (Funtana, 88.00); 6th – Tom Sterner (Super Cub, 87.00); 7th – David Moyer (Laser 200, 84.75); 8th – Doug Bond (Piper Cub, 83.5); 9th – Jim Schlapfer (Tiger Moth, 83.25); 10th – Ross Grinberg (Cub, 83.25); 11th – Ron Kinsey (Gee Bee, 81.25); 12th – Dick Stewart (Pietenpol, 79.75); 13th – Bob Mackey (Tiger Moth, 75.25). Every participant received several prizes. In addition, a raffle of an Evolution .61 engine was won by Ryan Jamison.

Special recognition was accorded to Bob Mackey, who has participated in 26 consecutive contests. Bob was awarded an HB .61 engine.

Tony Albence thanked everyone who participated as pilots and volunteers. Judges included Jim Watson, Sid Clement, Dave Malchione, Pete Malchione, Skip Crain, Ed Fitzwater, Terry Blanch, Ron Becker, and Carl Hauger. Tom Sterner donated the tasty food which was cooked by John Kirchstein with help from Pat Bolduc. We apologize if we have omitted anyone from this list.

Sincere thanks are extended to everyone who donated prize and raffle items to the event: Jesse Carney (Ryan STA ARF); Carl Cantera (Evolution engine); Ed Fitzwater (HB & Cox engines, kit); Balsa USA (discount certificates); Sky Blue Hobbies (6 rolls of Monokote); Dave and Pete Malchione (lots of ZAP goodies); Carl Hauger (video and screensavers); Jim Pierson [RCM Editor} (RCM subscriptions); and Tony Albence (numerous other items).

Warbirds Over Delaware Update

Online pre-registration is continuing. To date we have received over 80 pilot and 150 aircraft registrations.

Volunteers are still needed for the many areas of responsibility at this, our largest event. In particular we need support for the Delta Dart building program on Saturday for kids; many grounds patrol troops to keep everything shipshape and in good order; folks to help set up and clean up; and registration, impound, and auction help. We also need someone with an open landscaping-type trailer who has the time to pick up some equipment on Thursday (or Friday morning) and/or return it on Monday morning. Please sign up online (at www.delawarerc.org/volunteerreg.htm) or by contacting Pete Malchione (610-268-8129).

As in past years setup will occur on Wednesday evening (July 7th) beginning at 5:30. We anticipate a light turnout on Thursday’s initial pilot arrival and setup so the field will be available for open flying all day. Warbird pilot registration will begin on Friday morning and mark the beginning of the staffed transmitter impound with flying restricted to registered pilots until 5 pm. On Saturday, like last year, parking at the field will be restricted and busses will transport visitors from the parking area at the campground. Anyone who does not absolutely need their vehicle at the field on Saturday can help the always-difficult parking situation immensely by parking at the campground.

Raffle items to date include a large, framed print of this year’s Warbirds logo by Tony Albence and a radio.

Two new features have been added to the event so far. An Aircraft Auction will be scheduled for 5:30 pm on Saturday, July 10th. R/C aircraft and accessories can be entered into the auction. The Club will charge a commission of 10% of the selling price of each item. Mike Hudak has worked with full scale pilot Roger Robinson to create a great new raffle: the winner will receive a ride in a WWII-era warbird and will be able to choose between a PT-17 Stearman or a North American AT-6 Advanced Trainer. Only 100 tickets will be sold, at $10 each, so the odds of winning are good. You must be present at the drawing to win.

We have had interest expressed by a large number of vendors so we are currently planning an expanded vendor area.

   Come out and help!

Club Summer Meeting Locations

As usual, the June, July, and August meetings will be held at the R/C Field in the pavilion. Come early and get in a flight or two before the meeting begins. The current plan is to resume meeting at William Penn High School beginning in September if at all possible.

Help Us Keep You Up To Date

In order to keep all our members informed of all Club news, it is crucial that the Club remain informed of all changes to our members’ contact information. Please send all changes of address and phone numbers to our Treasurer, Dick Stewart (302-368-2911 or BALTICPLY@aol.com). E-mail address changes should be sent to John Kirchstein (jakirchstein@comcast.net) and Carl Hauger (cewhauger@yahoo.com).
